  • Chinese Uncertainties and Canadian Responses: After the Global Financial Crisis

    The purpose of the conference on Chinese Uncertainties and Canadian Responses: After the Global Financial Crisis was to make a contribution to the debate in Canada on what our policy towards China should be.  A recent visit of the Minister of International Trade to China, combined with the reopening of six consulates, suggests that the Canadian government is open to taking a new look at its China policy.

  • Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast 2008 Annual Meeting

    The theme for ASPAC 2008 was "Crossing Boundaries in the Asia-Pacific: Regional and Disciplinary Intersections". In the tradition of ASPAC and AAS conferences, proposals on the full range of Asian studies were included; however, we encouraged colleagues to venture outside conventions of space and methodology in their consideration of topics within their area of specialization in panels and papers proposed for the conference, considering issues comparatively as they relate to different parts of Asia and the Pacific, and juxtaposing disciplinary approaches.

    This conference, organized by CAPI's China Chair, Dr. Wu Guoguang, brought together experts on China's domestic politics and foreign relations to exchange ideas, and to address issues relating to how China's domestic factors can affect its foreign policy and behaviour; how institutional and operational features will affect China's international role; and how the Chinese regime mobilizes international sources in order to address its social issues.

  • Japan-China Cultural Relations Workshop

    CAPI, together with the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, invited a group of outstanding scholars of China and Japan to present new research on a historical issue of continued significance: the relationship between the two great powers of East Asia in the period from Western contact in the mid-nineteenth century to the end of World War II.

  • Japan-China Relations: Past History and Future Directions

    This international conference, organized by CAPI's former Japan Chair, Dr. Joseph Kess and China Chair Dr. Wu Guoguang, with Wenran Jiang of the University of Alberta, brought leading Chinese, Japanese and Canadian participants together for two days in March 2007.  The serious and forthright tone of the conference was established by contrasting reactions to a keynote lecture the first morning of the conference on the controversial role of apologies in East Asian affairs by Michael Donnelly, the Dr.

  • Socialist China, Capitalist China: Social-Political Conflicts Under Globalization

    As China has been experiencing economic prosperity resulting from its embrace of market reforms and globalization, social and political conflicts have also been emerging and intensifying. This international conference considered the questions: How much have market reforms and, particularly, globalization changed China both politically and socially?  What advantages and challenges have these reforms resulted in China's social and political spheres?  And what does "socialism" really mean for China under capitalist globalization?
